Dutch Philips Electronics said on Tuesday it had reached the milestone of 100,000 patents as it trebled its number of inventions to 3,000 a year, putting it on a par with champions such as IBM.
"For the last two years Philips has been the number one company in patent applications with the World Intellectual Property Organization," Philips said in a statement.
By selling the right to use its innovations, Philips squeezes hundreds of millions of euros a year from its portfolio of intellectual property. License revenues have increased by some 10 percent a year since Philips made it a priority of its business in the mid 1990s. :: собственно заметка

Coase's Penguin, or Linux and the Nature of the Firm - супер интересная статья, про peer-production, новую модель экономики ! (абстракт; вся статья - в pdf, 75 стр.)"That we cannot fully understand a phenomenon does not mean that it does not exist. That a seemingly growing phenomenon [of peer production] refuses to fit our settled perceptions of how people behave and how economic growth occurs counsels a closer attention, not studied indifference and ignorance.
...peer production of information is a phenomenon with much broader economic implications for information production that thinking of free software alone would suggest.
Peer production presents a fascinating phenomenon that could allow us to tap substantially underutilized reserves of human creative efforts."
Here are some recent corporate announcements. The first comes from Edgar Bronfman, who is about to become Warner Music's chairman. Mr Bronfman had this to say about the music industry's prospects: "We are going to need to see a rebalancing of the appetite for music through channels that are not currently commerce enabled. We see this growth coming."

To write a diary, they say," muses Steve Coogan as Samuel Pepys, "is to live life three times. Once when it happens, once when you write it, once when you read it again. I should like mine to be lived one more time - after I'm gone. Who knows, perhaps posterity will judge me kindly."
