Date: 2003-10-11 03:13 pm (UTC)well, as for holland, the answer is "no, not really"... :)
although there is a very peculiar tratidion in the city i am not living in - they run an annual camel race, sometime in july. never actually went too, only saw the posters. never had a chance to check what's bedind it.
me personally, i like camel, i collect camel figurines - well, used to, almost gave up by now, no time/money for that, but still have around 400 pieces.
in central asia camels are still grown, and used - often as transport, but also for dairy, meat and wool (peraps, skin?)
but this is mostly in mongolia, in other countires the camel were rarely used even in rural areas... i guess, now the real use is on decline, but i might be wrong, i haven't been there for many years...
i've seen much more camels in egypt, than, say, in almaty or bishkek. and also, camles in central asia are bactrians (two humps) and in the arab world they are dromaders (one hump).
i'v been to dubai once, so this post have a nostalgic component too.

400 is a lot of camels! Are they in a group that you could take pictures? Are they supposed to have some luck to them like elephants (with the trunks up) or something? :)
