He is already mature (old?) enough to see here an artistic play with meanings, rather than a direct representation. Plus, it happens in a museum context, where such an imagery is inevitably wrapped in 'cultural' context. Just imagine for a second that before coming to that hall he went through a dozen of others, with classic art, including multiple scenes of crucifixion, martyrdom of all sorts, and a couple of Boschs on top of everything. After such an impact the wallpaper as above is really a peace for the eyes.
