судя по сообщениям, огромное количество людей (включая и меня) узнало о событии через интернет; оказывается, у кучи народа стоят аларм-линки на всяческие системы мониторинга землятресений.

in today's wall street journal. it states that the sofisticated systems are mostly in the pacific ocean, because that is where most of the earthquakes and tsunami dangers are. the waves under the ocean travel with 500miles/hour speed and slow down only when they near the land - the speed makes then very hard to monitor. the deep sea ships ride out the tsunamis easily, most often they don't even notice that they are riding one.
