"...when I was down in Maryland helping my mother after the flood, a woman came by the house and told the story of her three caged pigs.

These pigs were nearly carried away during the flood. Lifted up in their cages by the raging torrent, they swam as hard as they could, their snouts barely out of the water, and they survived.

Hero pigs! Brave swimming pigs! Pigs rising above obstacles! Unsinkable pigs with seven highly effective habits, getting things done! Give them ribbons, and rub their snouts.

"We're butchering them next week," said the woman."

Such is life.

(This is pretty much what Doestoevsky mean by reality being more frightening that fiction - fiction has to make sense, it should be logical so a reader can relate to it, process and understand the story. So the pigs should survive, end of story, the events after are not relevant. And yet life is not singular and no victory can guarantee much about the future, anything can happen at any moment, however people crave certainty so much they are willing to ignore the fact that the world is always more than our understanding of it.

There's another nice layer that if you happened to be a pig you will be slaughtered no matter what you do and how you live. But they did live for an extra week.
