uff, i still owe you an explanation of the gis-like installation... was kind busy/sick lately, sorry.

in essence, these are special personal 'invitations' to attend various gatherings of the communist party (so called 'mandates'; they also gave the right to vote). i found them on ebay; god only knows what you can find on ebay these days.

now, they are ordered chronologically here - beginning from 1948 when stalin was well and alive - well, *very* alive :(

you see his position on this mandate? on the top of lenin, the founder of the soviet union.

stalin died in 1953, and soon after his death nikita khrushchev initiated a huge purgatory campaign to exterminate so called 'cult of personality'.

but even in 1955 stalin he is still on the madate paper, although already on a background. by 1958 it is lenin alone. further on, in 1963 there are no leaders, and by 1965 you see that even the quality of paper is of lesser quality.

this is the time later called 'the 1960-s when there was a certain movement toward 'cleaning' and 'revitalization' of the part, and of the social system in general. you may also remember how these events resonated in eastern europe in the beginning of 60-s.

however, later everything was shut-up and frozen for the next 20-30 years. and you see in 1990 lenin is well positioned on a pedestal. well, it happened earlier, but this is what I have.

for the majority of my russian 'readers' it’s kind of obvious developments.

it's really interesting how public figures are presented to the public during and after their duration of power. it's a crappy association, but all i can think of is how americans satirize bad public figures. that's kind of the opposite of what these invitations show, but in a way it's appropriately the reverse concept.

yep, it would be interesting to compare such a reverse order; while i'm sure somebody already made phd on the issue.

i became really interested in the progression of russian vs. american media when i was in film school. i think it says a lot that the russians perfected editing and propaganda while the americans were perfecting (well, they're the worst shit ever but still) the musical fairy tale.
