there is a number of online translators... surprisingly enogh, they are quite good in giving some sense of what is said, if one takes the hassle to use them...
imagine, i "read" japanese this way... not knowing any single hieroglyph :)
i read quite a technical stuff, though, written in a "proper" language... here in lj i obviously use all kind of slang and language games, and the translators make funny mistakes... look here, for example
