"Glaciers are of perennial interest alike to mountaineers and to physical geographers. Every mountaineer must have asked himself why the crevasses cut the ice-mass in one general direction at one part and quite otherwise in another; what are the causes of the banded appearance and of the granular character of the ice; and how it comes that a streak of moraine starts, with no apparent cause, at some point of the surface and grows broader and thicker as it passes down to join the great shoot of gravel and boulders where the ice ends..." - Alan G. Ogilve, Some Recent Observations And Theories On The Structure And Movement Of Glaciers Of The Alpine Type, Royal Geographical Society, 1912.
